Apple Unveils Touchscreen MacBook Pro With PROLED XDR Display: 10 Uses for Professionals

Apple's new touchscreen MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display brings M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, advanced display technology and touch-based workflows to 10 professional fields, from music production to heritage conservation.

Apple is bringing touchscreen technology to the MacBook Pro with the introduction of its new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch, unveiled at the company's ‘Pro and Tell’ event in Los Angeles. The move marks a significant development for professionals who have long awaited a MacBook with touch capabilities, particularly those working in music production, video editing, photography and other creative fields.

For years, Apple has remained reluctant to introduce touchscreen MacBooks, partly because touchscreen laptops have often struggled with performance issues over time. Lag after six months of use has been a common concern, particularly for professionals who rely on responsive hardware for demanding workloads.

The new MacBook Pro aims to address these concerns with a combination of display technology, powerful processors and touchscreen capabilities designed to support professional workflows.

Available in 14-inch and 16-inch models, the machine features a PROLED XDR display offering up to 2,000 nits of peak HDR and SDR brightness, an industry-leading 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, a 120Hz variable refresh rate and a wider colour gamut covering both P3 and Adobe RGB.

These display specifications are particularly important for professionals working with colour-sensitive content. Colours remain consistent when viewed from different angles, while details remain visible without appearing washed out.

Performance is powered by Apple's M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, described as the company's most powerful processors ever built for a professional laptop. The machine supports up to 128GB of unified memory and up to 16TB of storage.

Before the device becomes available on November 6, here are 10 professional areas where the touchscreen MacBook Pro could make a difference.

1. Music production and Logic Pro

Logic Pro holds a special place among musicians, many of whom find that using the software changes their approach to music production, from selecting plug-ins to mixing and mastering.

Already used by leading music producers and popular among iPad owners, Logic Pro takes advantage of the touchscreen capabilities of the new MacBook Pro.

Musicians can play software instruments using a multi-touch polyphonic keyboard, alongside tappable chord and drum pads displayed on the screen. For young musicians, transferring their work from an iPad to a Mac becomes easier, while experienced users gain access to new ways of working.

2. Visual effects and filmmaking

Visual effects once required substantial budgets and lengthy production timelines. Studios such as Industrial Light & Magic, which has played a major role in the digital era of filmmaking, combine multiple elements to create convincing illusions, including spaceships in flight.

If studios of this scale find practical applications for the touchscreen MacBook Pro, it could strengthen Apple's position among professional filmmakers.

One feature that stands out is genlock. The new MacBook Pro synchronises its display's refresh rate with a camera's capture, minimising ghosting, tearing and other artefacts during filming. Apple says the feature is valuable for virtual production and on-set work.

Touchscreen functionality could also make editing and colour grading faster. In Final Cut Pro, editors can mark ranges, place clips and pinch to zoom in on a cut.

3. A win for app developers

Developers building iPhone and iPad applications test their products using Apple's simulator, where mouse clicks typically stand in for finger gestures.

With a touchscreen MacBook Pro, developers can swipe, pinch, long-press and scroll directly on the display. This could help them identify problems that mouse-based testing may overlook, including buttons that are too small to tap, conflicting gestures and scrolling that feels unnatural.

Applications developed for the iPhone Duo's folding screen can also be tested at a similar size before being released on the phone.

For India's large developer community, much of which is mobile-first, the touchscreen MacBook Pro offers a more integrated development and testing environment.

4. Photography and image editing

Photographs used in magazines, posters and brochures often require detailed editing to achieve the desired finish.

Painting a mask over a sky, brushing out a blemish or dodging a face could become more natural with a finger than with a cursor.

Photographers can also swipe through 2,000 wedding photographs and move selected images aside, making the process faster and less tiring than clicking through each photograph.

Pinching into specific details and allowing couples to tap their favourite photographs on the spot could further simplify the selection process.

5. Teachers and trainers

The touchscreen MacBook Pro can also function as a whiteboard.

When connected to a projector or television, teachers can circle, underline and move elements on the screen while facing the class.

Students can approach the display to tap answers or move labels on a diagram. During online lessons, annotating a shared screen could become as straightforward as pointing at something.

Coaching centres and smart classrooms in India already use touch panels. A touchscreen MacBook Pro could offer teachers similar functionality through a portable device that fits in their bag.

6. Sales teams, architects and engineers

Product presentations and proposal discussions could become more interactive when clients are able to explore the material themselves.

Real estate agents can swipe through flats, zoom into floor plans and rotate 3D walkthroughs.

At construction sites, engineers can open drawings, zoom into specific sections and mark changes without requiring a mouse or a flat desk.

Architects and other professionals can also rotate building models using two fingers during client meetings, making it easier to examine designs from different angles.

7. Fashion designers and 3D modelling professionals

For professionals who design physical objects, touchscreen functionality brings the MacBook Pro closer to a traditional workbench.

Fashion designers can sketch silhouettes, redraw sleeves and use the entire display as a canvas. Rotating a virtual outfit on an avatar could also become more intuitive.

The display's coverage of both P3 and Adobe RGB colour gamuts is particularly relevant for professionals matching dye shades or preparing textile prints.

The benefits extend to 3D printing. Maxon ZBrush, a digital sculpting application, supports touch, allowing users to push, pull and smooth models by hand.

Shapr3D enables makers to sketch a component and turn it into a three-dimensional object.

Jewellers, an important constituency in India, can rotate a ring to inspect its settings and allow customers to view a design from different angles.

8. Game developers

Apple's M5 Pro and M5 Max chips feature enhanced shader cores, a third-generation ray-tracing engine and Dynamic Caching.

Apple says these capabilities boost performance in Unreal Engine and AAA games.

Developers can test touch controls for iPhone and iPad games directly on the display, potentially speeding up the process of building, testing and adjusting applications.

Level designers can also rotate scenes and move objects around a 3D world using their hands.

9. Sports coaches and analysts

Coaches and analysts spend considerable time reviewing match footage to examine player movements and identify areas for improvement.

An analyst can scrub through a bowler's run-up using a finger, pinch into a batter's footwork or freeze a frame to show a fielder where they should have stood.

Coaches can turn the laptop towards players and walk them through clips using touch gestures.

The display, which Apple says reaches up to 2,000 nits of brightness, should remain readable on sunlit grounds.

10. Archivists and heritage conservation

Museums, libraries and conservation projects are increasingly digitising manuscripts, paintings and textiles.

A conservator can pinch into a high-resolution scan to examine faded ink, rotate a 3D scan of a sculpture or compare two versions of a painting with a swipe.

In India, where institutions hold extensive collections of manuscripts and miniature paintings, digitisation projects could benefit from a portable machine combining colour accuracy with hands-on interaction.

The touchscreen MacBook Pro brings together display technology, processing power and touch-based workflows across a range of professional applications. Its potential uses extend from music production and filmmaking to education, design, gaming, sports analysis and heritage preservation.
